The Moral Thread

An Ancestral Path of Service to Humanity

The Fatherland · Abrahamic Covenant

Justice must never be bent. Partiality must never be shown. Malice must be rejected because it blinds even the wisest and corrupts even the righteous. The honest path, steady and clear and true, is the only path that endures across generations.

The Motherland · Gandhian Teaching

To find oneself, one must first lose oneself in the service of others. These are not separate teachings. They are the same covenant, spoken in different tongues across different centuries, lived by the same kind of people.

The Lakum~Rathod lineage and their relatives have always been that kind of people. From the Indus Valley to the world. From the Salt March to the halls of law, science and technology. The thread holds.

To act with Sisu, that quiet resolve which moves forward
even when the path demands sacrifice,
is to honour what both ancient teachings commanded.

Reject Malice.
Protect Those Who Cannot Protect Themselves.
Serve Without Seeking Recognition.

We pass this covenant, unbroken, to those who come after us.

The Lakum~Rathod Brothers: Indian Freedom Fighters & Guardians of National Trust

Rathod Family Historical Letters - Gandhiji, Modiji and Moraribapu Letters to Ramjidada Rathod Family
Click to view historical photo album of Lakum~Rathod Brothers with Gandhiji

The guidance provided by The Great Gandhiji from the Sabarmati Ashram reflects a heritage dedicated to the common good. The Lakum Rathod brothers Dahyabhai, Amarabhai, and Mepabhai, along with Arjundada, Ramjidada, and their relatives, worked shoulder to shoulder with the Father of the Nation. This tradition of absolute dedication is admired today by Modiji, marking the continuous multi-generational commitment to national service.

During the 1929 Dholera Satyagraha preparations and the 1942 Quit India Movement, Dahyabhai and Amarabhai stood in a solid team alongside Ismailbhai Nagori, Ratubhai Adani, Ramjidada, Harakhjidada, Chaganlal Yadav (maternal grandfather of Dr Vania), and Vajadada (grandfather of Dr. Pradyuman Vaja - Education and Social Justice Minister, Gujarat-2026), all united in the peaceful warrior spirit of Ahimsa Parmo Dharam.

This alliance of progressive minds was further deepened during their active work at the historic Sabarmati Ashram, where the family coordinated closely with visionary leaders like First Chief Minister Dr Jivarajbhai Mehta, establishing a legacy that combined freedom fighting with long-term nation-building.

This unbroken chain of the Mulnivasi Maurya spirit spans the entire arc of Indian civilisation, originating in the Indus Valley and continuing into the modern era. It is this same spirit of duty that saw the Rathod family and relatives entrusted by Ratubhai Adani and Sardar Patel to protect the State Treasury of Junagadh, cementing their role as permanent custodians of national trust. The historic base of operations was established when Sardar Patel requested to aquire the Taravada Asharam Place, cementing their role as permanent custodians of regional trust.

Chronicle of Heritage

The Indus Civilisation & Mulnivasi Maurya Spirit

Our journey begins with the Mulnivasi warrior and farmer clans rooted in the period of the Indus Civilisation and Maurya Dynasty, ancient architects of Indian civilisation, leadership and unmatched original innovation. This ancestral strength travelled from Indus to the lands of Rajasthan. From Rajasthan between 1200 and 1500 to the north Gujarat Ider region and eventually taking root in the heart of Saurashtra in Gohil State Lathi and Gaekwad State Amreli region.

We are humbly proud of our Mulnivasi roots and choosing principled independence being a Lakum and Rathod clan. Our community's soul remained the foundation of the service to humanity.

The Barot Chopada: 1200 Years of Living Family Record

The Lakum Rathod lineage is further documented through an extraordinary living tradition. A Barot family from Rajkot, the hereditary history keepers and spiritual guides of the Lakum Rathod clan, holds Chopada spanning approximately 1200 years of unbroken family history. Written in the old Lipi script associated with the Maurya period, these documents can be read and interpreted by the elderly leader of that Barot clan. The Barot tradition combines genealogist, custodian and spiritual teacher, and has preserved the oral and written record of this lineage across more than twelve centuries. This living archive stands as one of the oldest continuously maintained family records in Gujarat.

The Master and The Shield

Our Grandpa Dahyadada & Own Ramjidada:
Gandhiji's Teacher & Peaceful Warriors

While Dahyadada and the Lakum~Rathod brothers stood as the physical shield of the movement, Ramjidada provided its spiritual and technical foundation as Bapu's "Vanat Guru" (Weaving Teacher). This sacred bond extended deeply into family life, shaping the next generation of scientific leaders.

Our Own Ramjidada: Gandhiji's Vanat Teacher

In 1917 Gandhiji recognised the need to master indigenous cloth for Swaraj. He invited Ramjibhai from Lathi to Sabarmati to establish the weaving school. Ramjidada the Vanat Guru innovated the wide-width handloom for dhotis. He taught national leaders the science of weaving. The skills that played a central role in the modern India's independence and self-dependent social reform.

Ancestral Mandate

Ancestral Mandate & Brotherhood

The Lakum Rathod lineage originates from Mulnivasi warrior and farmer clans of the Maurya Dynasty and the Indus Valley Civilisation. These ancestors settled in Saurashtra choosing principled independence. The collective of brothers stood as guardians of national trust and champions of integrity. They embodied a fusion of ancestral strength and non-violent principles.

The Sacred Union & Ashram Utaro

The Sacred Union & The Gandhi Ashram Utaro

The bond of the Ashram extended into the next generation. Dr N. D. Rathod lived as a young student protégé and classmate of Dalpatuncle at the Gandhi Ashram, and was among the closest to Ramjidada. The elders Harakhjidada and Arjundada arranged his marriage to Motiben, herself a young protégé of the Ashram. On the auspicious day of the wedding, the family hosted their arrival, the sacred Utaro, at Ramjidada's place within the Gandhi Ashram itself, honouring one of the most cherished traditions of an Indian marriage.

The Sovereign Duty

Gandhi Ashram Commission: Preparation for The Salt March 1929-30

The Call of Duty

The transition of the Lakum Rathod lineage from traditional land protectors to guardians of the national movement was defined by a specific request in 1929. The prominent Gandhian leader Ratubhai Adani summoned the brothers to support the strategic preparations for the Salt March. Mahatma Gandhi explicitly trusted the lineage with the physical security of the Sabarmati Ashram during this critical period.

The Gateway of Chital

Responding to this mandate, Dahyabhai, Mepabhai, Amarabhai and the Lakum brothers departed from Medi on horseback. They travelled through Chital and reached the Ahmedabad Gandhi Ashram via the railway network.

Securing the Ashram

The leaders formally commissioned the Lakum Rathod brothers to secure the entire Gandhi Ashram. They guarded the physical resources and ensured the safety of the site during the highly sensitive planning phases of the Salt March.

The Royal Khajana

This legacy of absolute trust laid the foundation for their later appointment. Recognised for their absolute reliability at the Ashram, Sardar Patel chose them to serve as the guardians of the Royal Khajana of Junagadh to protect the newly formed nation's assets.

Bombay Adhiveshan 1942: The Quit India Movement

Twelve years after the Salt March, Dahyabhai and Amarabhai answered the national call once more. At the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee on 8 August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement, the Bombay Adhiveshan, with his historic "Do or Die" speech at Gowalia Tank Maidan. Viceroy Linlithgow described it as "the most serious rebellion since 1857." The brothers participated with the same spirit of protection, security and peaceful warrior resolve that had defined their service since 1929. Dahyabhai's firsthand account of the Adhiveshan, his struggles, his journey alongside Gandhi and other national leaders, and his devotion to the cause of a free India, was recorded in his own voice by his son Dr N. D. Rathod. This audio testimony remains a living primary source within the family archive, one of the few direct voice records of the Quit India Movement from a participant's perspective.

The Maternal Heart

Motiben Khuman:
A Global Bridge

The maternal lineage of Motiben Khuman represents a majestic convergence of cultures. As the only girl child of her generation, she became the guardian of a heritage that spans continents. Recent Genetic and DNA verification has unearthed a profound connection to over 40 Anglican relatives worldwide, tracing back to her great-great-grandmother's Anglo-Indian heritage.

A distinguished alumna of Seth C. N. Vidhyalay, Motiben had the distinct honour of welcoming India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Lal Bahadur Shastri with floral tributes. Her lifelong dedication to pedagogy was recognised by the Education Ministry with several Best Teacher Awards, marking years of excellence. To this day, her legacy of service as a beloved educator remains deeply etched in the hearts of the people of Dhari.

This alliance with the Sarabhai spirit ensured that the Rathod household was both a seat of integrity and a laboratory for Women’s Empowerment. Motiben brought these progressive ideals back to the heart of Saurashtra, transforming the future of generations to come.

Two Paths, One River

The Encounter with Justice:

How the next generations continue both principles without conflict, carrying Gandhi's non-violent path and Ambedkar's justice movement as one inheritance.

The Meeting of Two Streams

At the Bombay Adhiveshan 1942, while Dahyabhai, Amarabhai and their team stood with Gandhi's call for the Quit India Movement, they encountered the powerful parallel stream of thought led by Dr B. R. Ambedkar. Ambedkar did not support the Quit India Movement. He chose a different battlefield. Working within the constitutional framework, he argued that true freedom required social justice first. He feared that a rapid British departure would leave millions of Mulnivasi and Dalit Indians vulnerable to those who had long oppressed them.

A Recognition, Not a Contradiction

For the Lakum Rathod brothers, rooted in Mulnivasi heritage, this was not a contradiction. It was a recognition. Two principled men, two constitutional strategies, one shared river of justice. Gandhiji fought for national independence. Ambedkar fought for the freedom of every Indian from every form of oppression. The Rathod family honoured both. Dahyabhai and the team deeply appreciated Ambedkar's different point of view on the caste system and justice for millions who had been deprived for centuries.

Dr N. D. Rathod: An Ambedkarite by Conviction

This encounter shaped the next generation. Dahyabhai's son, Dr N. D. Rathod, became a devoted follower of Dr Ambedkar's justice movement. He was drawn to Ambedkar's argument that the battle was not for wealth nor for power, but for the reclamation of human personality. This conviction led Dr N. D. Rathod to Guruji Govindbhai Parmar, a close associate and guide of Ambedkarsaheb, and to his secretary Solankisaheb. Both became Guru to Dr N. D. Rathod in independent India, deepening a lifelong commitment to social justice and the dignity of every human being.

The Voice in the Archive

Dahyabhai's firsthand account, recorded in audio by Dr N. D. Rathod, carries this encounter within it. The Adhiveshan is mentioned many times in his own words. The voice of a peaceful warrior who stood with Gandhi, understood Ambedkar, and passed both traditions to his children is preserved within the family archive. It is one of the very few living audio records of this period from a direct participant.

Gandhiji fought for the independence of the nation. Ambedkar fought for the dignity of every person within it. The Rathod family carried both as one.

The Rathod Family Heritage Archive

The Rathod Family Heritage Archive documents the multigenerational legacy of the Lakum~Rathod lineage rooted in the Indus Valley Civilisation and the Maurya Dynasty, later settled in Saurashtra, Gujarat, India. This lineage is honoured for direct service with Mahatma Gandhi during the preparation of the Salt March 1930, for the security of the Sabarmati Ashram, and for the protection of the Junagadh State Treasury under the request of the first home minister of the Independent India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to Ratubhai Adani, first Agriculture Minister of Gujarat. Ratubhai called upon the Lakum~Rathod family to protect the treasury, and they successfully safeguarded it until the integration of Junagadh into the Indian Union. The family has a long history of service in agriculture, education, and scientific research, with Dr N. D. Rathod's contributions to agricultural science and his role as a pioneer in the field being particularly noteworthy. The family's legacy continues through the next generation of professionals who are making their mark in various fields internationally.

The family and relatives are associated with the Rathod, Lakum, Khuman, Badhiya, Mevada, Chudhary, Panchal, Diwan, Pande, Vaja, Vania, Leuva, Chavda, Dabhi, Helaiya, Solanki, Gohil, Parmar and allied clans of Saurashtra and Gujarat. The lineage includes professionals residing in India, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States of America. This archive is published for research, genealogy and heritage documentation purposes. The lineage is further documented through the Barot family of Rajkot who hold Chopada spanning approximately 1200 years of family history, written in old Lipi script of the Maurya period. The Barot tradition of hereditary history keeping preserves the complete genealogical and spiritual record of the Lakum Rathod clan.
